Project description and context:

Crossroads International will engage Canadians, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions both in Canada and overseas.

The Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence.

Crossroads International (CINTL) seeks to diversify and strengthen its capacity to mobilize institutional funding and reinforce sustainable strategic partnerships in the countries where it operates, particularly in East and Southern Africa, which required significant involvement from teams and partners on the ground.

Description the volunteer mandate

This mandate is especially relevant in the Tanzanian context, where relative political stability under President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the government’s newly launched Vision 2050 signal a commitment to equitable social development, good governance, and the empowerment of women, youth, and persons with disabilities, yet translating these policy commitments into practice remains uneven, leaving a critical role for civil society organizations and international partners. Economically, while Tanzania has experienced steady growth, it has remained insufficiently inclusive, with women, youth, and persons with disabilities largely confined to the informal sector. This is further complicated by the January 2025 halt of all new USAID funding obligations, which has disrupted many programs supporting these populations and intensified competition for international funding, with donors increasingly favoring consortium-based, locally anchored projects.

To address these challenges, CINTL faces several interconnected priorities:

  1. Strengthening the identification of and collaboration with potential local partners.
  2. Developing business development strategies to mobilize larger-scale funding for both CINTL and its partners.
  3. Co-creating projects with more inclusive national partners.
  4. Ensuring close monitoring of opportunities to expand pilot projects such as Judge My Ability, Not My Disability to facilitate their scaling up.

5. Facilitating consortium work with national and regional partners to expand funding opportunities

  1. Creating a closer link between field teams and the Canada office to ensure better synergy and more consistant response to the needs of communities and partners.
