Project description and context:
Crossroads International will engage Canadians, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions both in Canada and overseas.
The Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence.
Description of the partner
NAFGEM Tanzania was founded in 1998, when a small group of female human rights activists came together to address the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM) in the Kilimanjaro region. The organization was officially registered as an NGO in 1999. Since then, NAFGEM has worked to end FGM, child marriage, early pregnancy, and other forms of gender-based violence. Its work has contributed to a reduction in FGM prevalence in Kilimanjaro, from 35% in 1998 to below 22% by 2010, with similar progress achieved in the Manyara region.
Today, NAFGEM has approximately 110 members across eight districts and operates three safe shelters for girls. In recognition of its contribution to ending FGM and child marriage, NAFGEM was recognized in 2015 by Tanzania’s Ministry of Community Development, Gender and Children.
Despite these significant achievements and decades of work across diverse and extensive communities, much of NAFGEM’s history, knowledge, and impact has not been systematically documented or widely shared beyond the communities it serves.
