Annual flagship events will bring together Canadians, global advocates, and supporters of girls’ empowerment to advance gender equality worldwide

TORONTO, September 25, 2026

Crossroads International is proud to announce the return of its signature International Day of the Girl Breakfast, taking place in Toronto on October 6, 2026 and Edmonton on October 8, 2026. The annual events raise awareness and critical funds for girls’ empowerment programs that help girls stay in school, avoid child marriage, and build brighter futures around the world.

Now in its 15th year in Toronto and returning for a second edition in Edmonton, the Breakfast brings together community leaders, corporate partners, philanthropists, volunteers, and advocates committed to advancing gender equality and creating opportunities for girls everywhere.

This year’s events will feature keynote speaker Nonhlanhla Dlamini, Executive Director of Swaziland Action Group Against Abuse (SWAGAA), one of Crossroads International’s longest-standing partners in Eswatini. For more than three decades, Dlamini has been a leading voice for women’s rights and girls’ empowerment, helping to expand protection, education, and leadership opportunities for girls across the country.

In Toronto, acclaimed Canadian author Lawrence Hill will serve as host for the milestone 15th anniversary event, helping to celebrate fifteen years of collective action in support of girls’ rights globally.

“When girls are empowered, entire communities benefit,” shares Heather Shapter, Executive Director, Crossroads International. “The International Day of the Girl Breakfast is an opportunity for Canadians to stand alongside girls and young women around the world who are overcoming barriers, claiming their rights, and transforming their futures.”

Despite important progress, millions of girls around the world continue to face barriers to education, safety, and equal opportunity. Child marriage remains one of the most significant challenges. In Tanzania, courts ruled that child marriage is unconstitutional, yet legal reforms have still not been fully implemented, leaving many girls vulnerable to being married before the age of 18. Through locally led initiatives, including girls’ empowerment programs that promote education, leadership, and awareness of rights, Crossroads International and its partners help girls stay in school, build confidence, and pursue futures of their own choosing.

Since launching girls’ empowerment programming, Crossroads International and its partners have supported thousands of girls through initiatives focused on education, leadership development, gender equality, and protection from harmful practices. Funds raised through the Breakfast directly support locally led programs that help girls realize their full potential.

Over 15 Years of Impact

  • 24,500 girls supported through Crossroads programs and partnerships
  • 10,000+ girls continued their education and stayed in school
  • 8,000+ girls were able to avoid child marriage
  • 6,500+ girls were protected from female genital mutilation (FGM)

The International Day of the Girl, recognized annually by the United Nations, shines a spotlight on the challenges girls face worldwide while celebrating their achievements and leadership. Through this annual event, Crossroads International continues to mobilize Canadians in support of a more just, equitable, and inclusive world.
