Description of the partner

Hakizetu is seeking a Sustainability and Development Advisor to address a critical organizational need: strengthening long-term institutional sustainability across both programmatic and financial dimensions. As the organization continues to advance its mission of promoting rights, good governance, and inclusive development, there is an increasing need to reduce reliance on external donors and transition toward a more diversified, resilient, and sustainable operating model.
The key issue addressed by this mandate is the absence of a structured and dedicated approach to organizational sustainability planning. While Hakizetu has demonstrated strong programmatic impact, a significant proportion of its funding remains dependent on external donors.
To address this, the organization has set a strategic goal of generating at least 25% of its annual budget through internally generated income by 2030. However, there is currently limited in-house capacity to design and implement income-generating strategies, develop social enterprise models, and establish long-term financial sustainability frameworks.
Hakizetu also faces challenges in ensuring that its programs generate sustainable, long-term impact beyond individual project cycles. There is a need to strengthen program design, monitoring, evaluation, learning, and adaptation systems so that interventions contribute to lasting change and greater community ownership. At present, many of these responsibilities are managed by the Executive Director alongside other strategic and operational responsibilities, limiting the organization’s capacity to fully institutionalize sustainability practices and systematically integrate them across its work.
The broader operating context further reinforces the need for this mandate. Socially and politically, civil society organizations in Tanzania operate within an evolving environment that requires adaptability, innovation, and strong awareness of regulatory requirements. Economically, fluctuations in donor funding and increasing competition for grants underscore the importance of diversifying income streams and strengthening financial resilience. From an environmental and social perspective, the communities served by Hakizetu continue to experience persistent inequalities and vulnerabilities, making it essential to design programs that promote long-term resilience, sustainability, and community ownership.

Description the volunteer mandate

The Sustainability and Development Advisor will work closely with the Executive Director, program teams, and the Finance Department to strengthen sustainability across the organization. The Executive Director provides strategic leadership and oversees organizational growth; program teams are responsible for designing and implementing projects; and the Finance Department manages budgeting, financial reporting, and compliance. The Advisor will work across these functions to ensure that sustainability is embedded at all levels of the organization, from strategic planning and resource mobilization to program design, implementation, monitoring, learning, and impact assessment.
