THE OPPORTUNITY
The Philanthropy Intern will support Crossroads International’s efforts to engage Canadians in advancing women’s rights and gender equality in sub-Saharan Africa. This position will support our Philanthropy and Public Engagement team. The role requires an enthusiastic, dedicated and detail-oriented person who can comfortably manage multiple tasks, with a keen interest in fund-raising and a sense of donor relationship. The individual is a team-player with a willingness to learn and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities.
Depending on skillset, this individual will assist with tasks including, but not limited to strategizing events and campaigns, executing events, researching, and reaching out to corporations for events, emailing and calling donors, helping track communications on the database and other administrative support tasks as assigned.
The Philanthropy Intern position is full-time and requires a minimum of 35 hours per week for 8 weeks from May to August 2024, with the possibility of continued employment pending organizational needs.
The role is mainly remote, with the opportunity to work in-person at the Toronto office when possible.
*Detailed supervision and mentorship plans have been crafted for this position which include remote one-on-one monthly mentoring sessions, weekly guidance in team meetings as well as formal and informal input.
Supervision Plan:
- The Senior Manager, Philanthropy & Public Engagement will provide the Philanthropy Intern with:

- Weekly remote or in-person check-in meetings to discuss projects and tasks
- Prompt informal and formal feedback through email, Teams messages, discussions, scheduled coaching sessions and a verbal and written performance evaluation
- Job-specific training through online learning, thorough verbal and written instructions from supervisor, mentor and organizational subject matter experts
- In-depth health and safety training pertinent to both the Ontario and Quebec jurisdictions
Mentorship Plan:
- The Senior Manager, Philanthropy & Public Engagement will provide the Philanthropy Intern with:

- Remote one-on-one monthly mentoring sessions
- Weekly guidance in team meetings
- Formal input and participation in the performance evaluation
- Philanthropy skills development support and training in events and campaigns, donor relations, and additional support as required
Main Responsibilities
- Mailing out donor acknowledgement skits
- Thank you calls to newly acquired supporters
- Research and outreach to corporations to secure in-kind donations for silent auction event
- Helping with the execution of the 13th Annual Day of the Girl Breakfast event
- Helping with Charity Challenge campaign materials and coordination of a Team Raiser digital page – on Blackbaud Luminate Online
- Strategizing new event ideas
- Planning and strategizing various campaigns we can execute throughout the year (UN days, Special holidays like Mother’s Day)
- Sending out tax receipts to donors
- Other duties and special projects as assigned
Additional Responsibilities as Assigned
- Prospect Research to find prospective funders: corporations or foundation funders
- Creation of Prospect Profiles for prospective funders
- Creation of digital materials like social media posts for donor recognition or marketing
Skills Development
- The Philanthropy Intern will have the opportunity to develop the following skills throughout their employment:

- Customer service skills: establishing donor relationships and handling donor questions and concerns
- Teamwork skills: close collaboration with members of the Philanthropy team, along with periodic interaction with other functional teams and individuals
- Communication skills: daily exchanges with Philanthropy colleagues, and prospective or existing donors, as well as opportunities to take meeting notes, present at team, committee and organizational-level meetings
- Digital skills: requirement for use of computer, and Microsoft Office 365 applications including Teams, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Forms; internet research
- Leadership skills: autonomy in leading events and campaigns with support where needed; opportunity to present work in various forms and meet with the Executive Director
- Organizational skills: ability to effectively prioritize, manage, classify and store relevant information
- Philanthropy/Fundraising skills: prospecting for new donors, cultivation of donor relations and understanding campaign systems, tools, and administration.
WHAT YOU WILL BRING TO CROSSROADS
- Enrolled in a university program or equivalent in a related field (Business, Philanthropy, Human Resources, Sociology, etc.)
- Eligible to work in Canada
- Interested in issues of international development, gender equality and poverty eradication
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in English. Bilingualism a strong asset
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office 365 applications (i.e., SharePoint, Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
- Capacity to work collaboratively in a team and independently
- Organizational skills and attention to detail
- Capacity to work both collaboratively in a team and independently
- High level of autonomy and initiative
- Ability to work remotely for majority of the workweek in a fast-paced environment with the option of going into office if preferred
