Project description and context:
Crossroads International will engage Canadians, Canadian stakeholders, Crossroads staff and volunteers, local partner organizations and women and men in sub-Saharan Africa to become Gender Equality Champions both in Canada and overseas.
The Volunteer Cooperation Program (VCP) aims to reduce gender inequalities and alleviate poverty by addressing gender-based violence, inequalities in access to resources and economic opportunities, and barriers in exercising strategic forms of choice, voice, and influence.
Description of the partner & volunteer mandate
NAFGEM Tanzania has spent over two decades working to eradicate female genital mutilation (FGM), child marriage, and other harmful traditional practices affecting women and girls in the Kilimanjaro and Manyara regions. NAFGEM relies heavily on donor funding, making it critical to clearly articulate its organizational history and demonstrate impact to ensure long-term sustainability.
Through this mandate, NAFGEM wishes to establish a clear understanding of its journey towards the realization of its mission. Despite over 25 years of impactful fieldwork, the organization has not yet systematically documented its experiences from inception. The stories of its growth, lessons learned, best practices developed, and successes achieved remain largely uncaptured. This gap limits NAFGEM’s ability to reflect on its progress, communicate its value to partners, and lay a stronger foundation for its future. The organization needs support conducting an internal assessment that documents its evolution from inception to present, and translates findings into improvements to its strategic plan. The findings will also contribute to the refinement of NAFGEM’s vision, ensuring it remains relevant, ambitious, and grounded in the realities of the communities it serves.
The volunteer will work directly with NAFGEM’s executive leadership, who hold the institutional memory of the organization’s founding, key milestones, and strategic decisions. Executive will provide access to historical records, program documentation, and key stakeholder contacts necessary for a comprehensive assessment.
