Crossroads International Awards two Karen Takacs Women’s Leadership grants in 2020

THE KAREN TAKACS WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP FUND CELEBRATES 5 YEARS OF PUTTING RESOURCES IN WOMEN’S HANDS

TORONTO, ON – October 5th, 2020

Coalition Burkinabé pour les Droits de la femme (CBDF) and La Colombe in Togo are the two KTWLF recipients this year.

“Honestly, the applications were so unique and inspiring this year that the committee decided to make two awards,” said Darlene Bessy, Chair for the KTWLF Advisory Council. CBDF will gather stories of change of resilient women leaders, working in various fields of the social, political and economic life in Burkina Faso. In Togo, La Colombe will promote women’s rights in 25 villages by strengthening the knowledge of the village chiefs’ wives on women’s rights and leadership.

“This grant will allow us to implement this project which is very important to us in more ways than one.” Said MEDAH Félicité, President of the Board of Directors. “The CBDF has indeed invested a lot in the citizenship of women and their participation in power. Through this project, it is another target that we are reaching, the young girls who are the next generation of tomorrow. Thank you to the Karen Takacs Women’s Leadership Fund for making this dream come true.”

A Legacy of Leadership

The Karen Takacs Women’s Leadership Fund provides financial support to African organizations whose work advances leadership and equality for women and girls by supporting projects to reduce violence against women and girls; facilitate the participation of women in decision making; and the increase of social and economic autonomy of women in Africa. Each year, a $10,000 grant is awarded to advance women’s leadership as well as scholarships to emerging women leaders in Africa in partnership with Coady International Institute and Equitas.

The fund was established in 2015 to celebrate the transformative leadership Crossroads International’s former Executive Director, Karen Takacs before her death in 2015.  As we mark the 5th anniversary of her passing, her legacy of leadership lives on in the lives of women and girls in Africa. Enhancing Women’s Voices

“These are some of the moments where I think back and feel that this was what I was meant to do. Bringing really diverse people together and trying to get them to agree to put aside self-interest to try and achieve something bigger.” — Karen Takacs
