Crossroads International announces 2018 Karen Takacs Women’s Leadership Fund grant recipient

Toronto, ON, September 10 2018 – Women’s participation in local governance is getting a boost thanks to new program funding tackling women’ underrepresentation in politics in Burkina Faso.  The 2018 Karen Takacs Women’s Leadership Fund grant was awarded this year to Crossroads International’s partner, Réseau d’Appui à la Citoyenneté des Femmes Rurales d’Afrique de l’Ouest et du Tchad (RESACIFROAT).  The one year project implementation will start in September 2018.

“This project is for us one of the fundamental keys to the implementation of women’s rights in our country. For RESACIFROAT, it is important that women, especially rural women, who make up more than 85% of women in Burkina Faso, are able to defend their own rights in order to emancipate themselves and show their “important” contribution to the development of their country,” explains Rosalie Ouoba, Coordinator at RESACIFROAT.

RESACIFROAT will receive $10,000 to increase the participation of rural women in local governance. With less than 10% of women elected in the national assembly, the political sphere in Burkina Faso is mostly dominated by men. Women’s underrepresentation in politics is present at every level, nationally as well as locally.

With this funding, RESACIFROAT aims to increase the number of women voters and candidates in the 2020 local election. “By raising awareness around the importance of voting and participating in local decision-making spheres and governance and supporting young women leaders to run for local offices, we are confident that the participation of rural women in 4 city councils can increase by 25%,” says Carine Guidicelli, Crossroads International’s Executive Director.

The 2018 grant was open to Crossroads’ partners in Burkina Faso and Senegal.

The Karen Takacs Women’s Leadership Fund was created to celebrate Karen Takacs’ leadership during her 12 years as Crossroads International’s Executive Director and honour her legacy after her death in August 2015. The fund provides vital financial support to African organizations whose work advances women’s leadership and equality for women and girls and educational scholarships to emerging African women leaders.
