BACKGROUND

Crossroads International is an international development organization that is working towards reducing poverty and increasing women’s rights around the world. Working with local partners in 28 projects, in eight countries and supported by hundreds of volunteers each year, Crossroads leverages expertise and resources, North and South, required to help people overcome poverty and assert their human rights.

Crossroads and Gone Rural have been working in partnership in Swaziland since 2010.

Gone Rural (Pty) Ltd

Gone Rural’s mission is to create home-based sustainable income for over 780 women in Swaziland’s rural areas, through handcraft. The products combine tradition with innovation to create hand-woven basketry, home accessories and bold statement pieces made with natural grasses and up-cycled materials. With commitment to sustainable social responsibility and Fair Trade principles, Gone Rural has successfully created a business model that empowers 786 rural women by providing them with home based income and skills training.  Gone Rural sells to over 300 customers worldwide and is committed to growing its sales base and volume to generate more income for rural women as well as continually evolving the level of empowerment we offer to these talented artisans.

Mandate history:

In line with Gone Rural’s objective to increase the income offered to Swaziland’s rural women, the enterprise is constantly looking for new opportunities to increase what the artisans earn; a central part of this strategy includes increasing sales and providing a more efficient and streamlined customer ordering process. To this end, Gone Rural seeks to develop an online wholesale ordering system where customers of Gone Rural can view, select and order their product selection easily and with less errors and omissions. This will allow us to more accurately meet orders and satisfy customer expectations in order to retain customers and increase sales with increased artisan income as a result.

POSITION DETAILS

Together with the Gone Rural team, the volunteer will:

  • Conduct research into customer ordering patterns and product range in order to understand the sales and order to design and effective system with understanding of the customer and the social enterprise
  • create and develop an online wholesale ordering system (using a simple web platform such as Wix or NuORDER) for wholesale customers to place orders easily and remotely, to eliminate confusion of order specifications and to streamline the order processing systemDevelop a marketing strategy for new customer acquisition in line with customer and consumer research
  • Upload product images and information from Gone Rural lookbook, catalogue and linesheet to create a complete online catalogue for the wholesale ordering system
  • Train marketing staff on use and maintenance of the wholesale ordering system.

Qualification criteria for selection include:

  • Bachelor Degree or Diploma related to web development, business development or marketing and sales
  • Experience conducting market research
  • Experience with the creation and maintaining of e-commerce and B2B systems
  • Understanding of wholesale and retail business dynamics
  • Analytical and information-seeking skills, effective and proven writing skills
  • Oral fact-finding, presentation and communication skills
  • Computer Skills: B2B and e-commerce software, Microsoft applications, PowerPoint and internet research

Other skill set/knowledge:

  • Passion for women’s empowerment is essential
  • Readiness to deal with change
